Soil Nails

This method of excavation support utilizes closely spaced steel bars, called "soil nails" to reinforce and strengthen the existing ground soil layer.

Construction Stages
  • Excavation
  • Placement and grouting of soil nails
  • Shotcrete application
This sequence of soil nailing is repeated to achieve the total depth of excavation required.

Theory

Soil nails are used to create a mass of soil that behaves as a gravity retaining wall to resist the earth's pressures.

Applications

Soil nail application is useful for excavating directly adjacent to existing buildings, property lines and roads as well as pit excavation inside industrial facilities.
